The short version Klaeri scans the products you view and checks their ingredients against published databases. We collect the minimum needed to do that. We do not sell your personal data, and the Chrome extension keeps your preferences on your own device. You can use the free extension without creating an account.The Klaeri Chrome extension
This section describes exactly how the free Chrome extension handles your data. It is the canonical privacy disclosure for our Chrome Web Store listing.
What the extension stores — on your device only. The extension uses your browser's local storage to save your preferences, the allergen/ingredient sensitivities you choose to flag, your watchlist items, and your recent scan history. This information is kept locally in your browser so the extension can show you personalized ingredient alerts. It is not transmitted to Klaeri, not stored on our servers, and never sold or shared with third parties.
What the extension accesses. When you open a supported product page, the extension reads the ingredient list shown on that page (via the activeTab, scripting and host permissions declared in its manifest) so it can match those ingredient names against published database findings and display a plain-English explanation. It does not read or collect pages that are not product pages, and it does not monitor your general browsing activity.
Notifications. If you opt in, the extension can show alerts (such as ingredient results, allergen warnings, or watchlist updates). Notifications are based on your own preferences and can be turned off at any time.
Your control. You can clear the extension's stored data at any time from its settings, and uninstalling the extension removes all of its locally stored data. The extension does not require an account.
Note: creating an optional Klaeri web account (separate from the extension) lets you sync this information across devices. If you choose to do that, the data described above is stored in your account as covered by the rest of this policy. The extension on its own does not create an account or send your data anywhere.
What we collect
Klaeri is built to work with as little personal data as possible. Depending on how you use the product, we may collect:
- Account information you choose to provide — email address and password (stored encrypted) if you create a Klaeri account
- Product and ingredient lookups — the product pages you scan, so we can return database mentions and improve our ingredient coverage
- Watchlist and profile preferences — ingredients you ask us to monitor and any sensitivity preferences you set, stored to personalize what you see
- Basic usage analytics — anonymized information about which features are used, to help us improve the product
What we do not collect
- We do not collect your browsing history outside of supported shopping sites
- We do not read pages that are not product pages
- We do not collect payment card numbers directly — payments are handled by our payment processor
- We do not require health information; any sensitivity preferences you enter are optional and used only to personalize your experience
How ingredient scanning works
When you view a supported product page, Klaeri reads the ingredient list shown on that page and checks it against our database of published regulatory and scientific findings. Wherever possible this matching happens locally in your browser. When a lookup requires our servers, we send only the ingredient names needed to return results — not your identity or full browsing activity.
Camera and barcode scanning
Your camera stays on your device. If you use the barcode scanner on our website, your browser asks your permission before the camera turns on. The video is processed entirely on your device to read the barcode — we never upload, transmit, record or store camera images or video, and no photo of you or your surroundings ever reaches our servers.
The only thing produced by scanning is the barcode number (for example 0123456789012). That number is used to look up the product. You can revoke camera access at any time in your browser settings, and you can always type a barcode or search by product name instead.
Third-party product databases
If a product isn't in Klaeri's own catalog, we look it up in public product databases so we can still show you its ingredients. To do this we send only the barcode number — never your name, email, account, location or browsing history. These providers are:
- Open Beauty Facts / Open Food Facts — an open, community-maintained product database (ODbL licensed). Because entries are community-submitted, they can be incomplete or inaccurate, so we label this data clearly wherever we show it.
- INCI API — a cosmetics ingredient database. We use it only to retrieve the ingredient list. We do not use, display or store its safety scores or ratings, because Klaeri does not score or grade ingredients.
To be precise about how each request is made: the INCI API lookup goes through Klaeri's own server, so that provider does not see your device or IP address. The Open Beauty Facts / Open Food Facts lookup is made directly from your browser to their public database — which means, as with visiting any website, their servers can see your IP address and standard request details. We send them no personal information beyond the barcode number itself. Each provider handles the request under its own privacy policy.
How we use your information
- To provide ingredient transparency results and product comparisons
- To maintain your account, watchlist, and personalization preferences
- To send daily watchlist updates if you have enabled them
- To improve our ingredient database and product features
- To detect abuse and keep the service secure
Sharing and selling
We do not sell your personal information. We share data only with service providers that help us operate Klaeri (such as hosting and payment processing), under contracts that limit their use of it, or where required by law. Aggregated, de-identified statistics about ingredient trends may be published, but these never identify an individual.
Affiliate links
Klaeri may earn affiliate commissions when you purchase a product through a link we show. These links are based on ingredient database comparison only and are not endorsements. Affiliate relationships do not change what database mentions we report for any ingredient.
Your choices
- You can use the free extension without an account
- You can clear your watchlist and history at any time
- You can request access to, correction of, or deletion of your account data
- You can uninstall the extension to stop all data collection
Data retention and security
We keep personal data only as long as needed to provide the service or as required by law, and we protect it with encryption in transit and at rest. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to safeguard your information and limit what we hold in the first place.
Cookies and tracking
We do not use advertising trackers, analytics pixels, or third-party marketing cookies. Klaeri sets only the small number of cookies and local-storage items needed for the site to function — for example keeping you signed in, remembering your preferences, and (during our private beta) remembering that your device is allowed to preview the site. Because these are strictly necessary to provide the service you asked for, no cookie-consent banner is required. If we ever add analytics, we will update this policy and ask for your consent first where the law requires it.
Why we're allowed to process your data (legal bases)
- To provide your account and the service — because it's necessary to perform our agreement with you (creating an account, saving your scans, watchlist and sensitivities).
- With your consent — for optional things like marketing emails or joining the waitlist. You can withdraw consent at any time.
- Our legitimate interests — keeping the service secure, preventing abuse, moderating Label Club, and improving how Klaeri works. We balance these against your privacy rights.
Your rights and how to use them
Wherever you live, you can ask us to: access a copy of your data, correct anything wrong, delete your account and data, export your data, object to or restrict certain processing, and withdraw consent for marketing at any time. Email hello@klaeri.com and we'll action it — we aim to respond within 30 days, and we will never charge you or make you jump through hoops to exercise a right.
If you're in the EU, EEA or UK, you also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection supervisory authority. If you're in California, you have the right to know what we collect, to delete it, and to opt out of "sale" or "sharing" of personal information — Klaeri does not sell or share your personal information, and we do not act as a data broker.
Children
Klaeri is not intended for children. You must be at least 16 to create an account. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 16, and if we learn we have, we will delete it. If you believe a child has given us their information, please contact us and we'll remove it promptly.
